Adoption Process |
Thank you for taking an interest in working with MidWest
Dachshund Rescue, Inc., to possibly adopt a rescued
dachshund. MWDR is a non-profit, all-volunteer
organization serving Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.
If you are interested in working with dachshund rescue,
and you do not live in the Midwest, please
contact a dachshund rescue in your area.
After reading the following information, the first step to
working with MWDR is to submit an adoption application.
Once your application is received, the closest
rescue representative
will contact the personal and veterinarian references
you included in your application. The next step would
be a home check, where a rescue representative or
volunteer meets you and your family in your home.
If everything checks out well, a rescue representative
would help you find a rescued dachshund to adopt.
If you are approved to adopt a rescued dachshund, a MWDR representative will do his or her best to find a matching dachshund within the MWDR network. Prior to adoption, every MWDR foster receives, as needed:
- Routine physical exam (check eyes, ears, mouth, heart, general health);
- Rabies vaccination;
- DHPP vaccination;
- Found negative for or eradicated of parasites (fecal check);
- Found negative for or undergone treatment for heartworms;
- Treatment for ear mites and/or ear infections;
- Spay or neuter procedure with pain medication;
- Blood and urine tests;
- Dental cleanings and extractions; and
- Long-term health conditions identified.
- Bordetella
Following is the adoption-fee structure for adopting MWDR
dachshunds:
| Less than 1 year old: | $325 |
| 1-9 years old: | $250 |
| 9+ or Special Needs: | $150 |
| Dachshund mixes below 2 years : | $200 |
| Dachshund mixes over 2 years: | $150 |
MWDR will not adopt to families that have unaltered pets
(dogs and cats) unless those animals are champions or are
actively being shown, with reasonable expectation of
attaining a championship title; are currently too young
(proof of age required), and will eventually be altered;
or are unable to undergo surgery due to a health risk.
MWDR seldom has puppies and dogs less than one-year old.
If you are set on adding a puppy to your family, please
request information regarding responsibly purchasing a
puppy from an ethical, reputable breeder. Also check
out How to Choose a Good Breeder.
Thank you for your interest in adopting a MWDR dog.
Please feel free to contact the rescue representative
closest to you or rescue@mwdr.org
with questions. If you are interested in adopting a rescued dachshund,
and you do not live in the Midwest, please contact a dachshund
rescue in your area.
Information regarding completing an adoption application:
- Before filling out the adoption application, please do
your best to determine if a rescued dachshund
is appropriate for you and your family at this time. Rescued dachshunds often do not go well with young children.
- Applicants must be 21 years or older.
- Only those who wish to adopt and will be caring for the adoptive dog should fill out the adoption application. Please do not fill out the application for someone else. MWDR does not adopt out dogs as surprise gifts.
- Please provide your full name, full home address and e-mail address.
- Please completely and honestly answer each question to the best of your ability.
- In order to process your application, you must provide a veterinarian reference (if you currently have or recently had pets) and three personal references, so gather this information before proceeding. Please provide telephone numbers for all references.
- Please be certain to sign the adoption application.
- If you prefer filling out a hard-copy version of the
adoption application, please request this from the
rescue representative
closest to you.
