Adopt a Dachshund
How do I adopt?
MidWest Dachshund Rescue wants to help you find your new best friend! Before applying to adopt, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our adoption process, guidelines, and specific requirements for each dog. We believe that a thoughtful match makes for a joyful forever home, and we are here to guide you every step of the way.
However if you are not ready to adopt or have a vacation scheduled, do not fill out an application until you are back.

1
See if you meet the Adoption Guidelines
At MidWest Dachshund Rescue, we are dedicated to finding the perfect forever homes for our amazing Dachshunds. Every application is treated with care as we invest time and effort in checking references, conducting home visits, and getting to know our adopters.
We truly appreciate your patience as you navigate our application process. We understand it can seem lengthy, but it's designed to ensure the best matches between our beloved dogs and their future homes. Please take a moment to review our adoption guidelines before applying, as they will help streamline your experience and facilitate a smooth adoption journey.

2
Complete an adoption application
When you decide you are ready to bring a new family member into your life, just complete our online application form. If you’re interested in a specific dog, list the name of the Dachshund you are interested in adopting on the application. Sorry, we do not pre-approve adopters.
Note: If you will be out of town in the near future, do not fill out an application until you return.

3
A MWDR Representative will contact you
Once you complete your application, a MWDR representative will reach out to explain our process, including contacting references and scheduling a home visit (we ask that all family members are present during the visit.) Please allow a few weeks for us to get back to you, as we want to ensure the best match for both you and our Dachshunds.

4
Talk to the Foster Family
Part of the adoption process will be talking to the foster home to get more information on the foster you are considering. If it is agreed that the doxie may be a good fit for your family, we’ll arrange a meet and greet so you can see how they fit into your family!

5
A family grows by four feet!
After a successful meet and greet, we guide you through the adoption process, starting with an adoption contract and a two-week trial period. This allows you to truly get to know your new family member and ensures that the adoption is the right fit for everyone involved.

Adoption Guidelines
At MidWest Dachshund Rescue one of our goals is to match dogs to the best forever home possible. Once an application is complete, there is alot of time and effort putting into checking references and getting home visits scheduled and completed and learning about our adopters.
We understand that our application is somewhat lengthy. With all of that in mind, please review the below requirements before completing the application:
Must be 23+ years of age
Must reside in our adoption area of IA, IL, IN and WI. We will consider the following other Midwest states of MI, MN, MO and OH on a case by case basis.
Must be willing to travel to meet the dog at the foster home (all dogs are fostered in IL, IN, IA or WI.) We do not transport any foster to forever homes.
If other animals reside in the home, they must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations.
All family members living in the home must be in agreement on adopting.
Must be ready to adopt. If you are moving, please wait until after you have moved to start the adoption process as a home visit is required.
If, for any reason and after any amount of time, you can no longer keep a dog adopted through MWDR, they must be returned to MWDR (Please note: contract is legally binding.)
We do not adopt dogs out as a gift for someone else, even if they are in your household.
